M-NCPPC Prince George’s County Planning Department Releases Staff Draft
West Hyattsville-Queens Chapel Sector Plan and Proposed Sectional Map Amendment (SMA)
LARGO, MD – Following an approval from the Prince George’s County Planning Board, the Prince George’s County Planning Department of The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission (M-NCPPC) recently released the 2024 Staff Draft West Hyattsville-Queens Chapel Sector Plan and its concurrent Proposed Sectional Map Amendment (SMA), a comprehensive zoning proposal to implement the plan’s land use, economic, and environmental goals, policies, and strategies. The draft plan is available to view online at https://pgplan.org/WHQCStaffDraft.
This comprehensive draft plan for the neighborhoods surrounding the West Hyattsville Metrorail Station recommends a coordinated set of actions that will:
- increase access to transit and the region’s trail network.
- prevent further degradation of the Northwest Branch of the Anacostia River.
- reduce flood risks to residents.
- provide much needed housing options that allow a broad range of families, households, and individuals to live in a thriving, vibrant, and sustainable community.
Residents and stakeholders may provide public comment and testimony on the draft sector plan and proposed SMA at the Joint Public Hearing of the Prince George’s County Council, sitting as the District Council, and the M-NCPPC Prince George’s County Planning Board scheduled for July 8, 2024, at 6 p.m. at the Wayne K. The 2024 Staff Draft West Hyattsville-Queens Chapel Sector Plan contains recommendations that combine innovative practices that are successful in comparable communities with creative solutions specific to this distinct area of Prince George’s County. The plan is the result of over three years of community and stakeholder engagement, interagency coordination, and extensive analysis of both current and anticipated future conditions. The plan includes many ideas that community members provided during the public engagement process and the October 2022 Joint Public Hearing of the Prince George’s County District Council and the Planning Board on the previous 2022 Staff Draft Plan.
