Environmental

The Environmental Planning Section evaluates the environmental impact of land use plans and development proposals on woodlands, wildlife habitats, green infrastructure, streams, floodplains, wetlands, unsafe soils, and rare, threatened, and endangered species habitats. Staff also identify appropriate measures to mitigate impacts.

The Section prepares comprehensive evaluations of the watershed basis (entire watershed area), environmental impact reports for sand and gravel mining applications, and coordinates responsibilities related to woodland conservation and the Chesapeake Bay Critical Area. Staff also represent Prince George’s County on the Patuxent River Commission, a tributary strategy team to restore the Chesapeake Bay.

Agricultural Planning

The Agricultural Planning team prepares studies and plans that provide findings, policies, and strategies for sustaining urban and rural agriculture in the County, including agritourism, farmers’ markets, and special agriculture-related events.

The team works with the Prince George’s County Food Equity Council, the agricultural marketing specialist, and the urban agriculture coordinator, to support agricultural business enterprises and implement sound zoning guidelines.

2017 Resource Conservation Plan

The Countywide Resource Conservation Functional Master Plan (the “Resource Conservation Plan” or “RCP”) combines the related elements of green infrastructure planning, agricultural conservation, and rural character as three functional master plans in one to streamline the process, meet state requirements for planning elements, and more efficiently update existing plans and maps.
