What does “public safety surcharge” mean?
In 2005, the Prince George’s County Council through a County Council bill, CB-055-2005, established a public safety surcharge on new residential construction permits. The revenue from the surcharge is distributed to police, fire, and emergency medical services in the county.

Section 10-192.11 of the Prince George’s County Code requires the surcharge to be adjusted for inflation. A Prince George’s County Council resolution, CR-050-2011, adjusted the surcharge for Fiscal Year 2012, beginning July1, 2011, to $2,312 for permits issued for construction located inside the Developed Tier and $6,933 for all other buildings.
