HISPANIC HERITAGE MONTH CELEBRATION
Afterlife by Julia Alvarez – Tuesdays, October 4 and 11, 7 pm
Join us for this rousing two-part book discussion of Julia Alvarez’s engaging, contemporary novel “Afterlife” about the perseverance of undocumented works in the backdrop of New England.
Nanny Assis – Saturday, October 8, 8 pm
Renowned Brazilian instrumentalist, Nanny Assis will perform with Leonard Lucini, José Luiz Martens, and Alex Hamburger performing original compositions featuring the sounds of the Latin world. Now through October 7, buy one ticket and get one free at 301-377-7800.
What’s Mine and What’s Yours by Naima Coster – Saturday, October 22, 7 pm
We book-end Montpelier’s celebration with Naima Costa’s multigenerational saga “What’s Mine and What’s Yours”. This book discussion is being hosted by the Maryland Humanities as part of the One Book, One Maryland series.
ARTIST PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT SERIES
Protecting Your Artwork - Saturday, October 29, 2022, 11 am
Your work has been accepted for an exhibition out of town! Now what? Learn the ins and outs of preparing your work to be shipped. This workshop includes various demonstrations on how to wrap and package your art to move long distances. Melissa Burley, a Montpelier Arts Center resident artist and professional art handler, will walk you through various steps and processes to ensure your work arrives in one piece. Ages 16 & up; FREE
OCTOBER CONCERT WEEK
Miss Gayle and Friends – Thursday, October 20, 12 noon
She has appeared on national television and captivated audiences of all ages with her humor, charm, and wit. Join us for a spellbinding, captivating, and remarkably funny lady for an afternoon of laughs with Ms. Gayle and Friends in this comedy concert. Tickets are $12/person and this concert is for ages 60 and better.
Quiet Life Motel - Friday, October 21, 8 pm
With a nocturnal, funky, and cinematic sound, the music of Quiet Life Motel weaves together jazz harmonies, shimmering orchestral textures, and frolicsome grooves. The group is led by violinist and composer David Schulman, whose music has been called “mysterious and beautiful” by The Washington Post. Join us on a journey of unexpected sounds in jazz improvisation. Tickets are $25/person
Benjamin Burney - Sunday, October 23, 3 pm
Originally from Youngstown, Ohio, tenor Benjamin Burney has performed nationally and internationally from the Caribbean Islands to Estonia. He made his Kennedy Center debut performing in the opera Iphigenia by Wayne Shorter and Esperanza Spalding. This recital is free, but a $5 donation is appreciated.
