Archaeology Lab Experience: Themes of Black Resistance in Material Culture

Saturday, February 25, 2023

The Archaeology Office invites you to learn more about how enslaved Black laborers used materials in their everyday lives to resist White supremacy. While we call these objects “artifacts,” for the people who were enslaved on sites such as Mount Calvert and Northampton, small, everyday objects such as marbles, cooking wares, and others were an important way of providing agency, joy, and love to a community held under bondage. During this program, participants will be able to explore more of the material culture excavated from these sites by helping archaeologists to catalog and label. We will also engage in conversations about how these everyday objects were tools of resistance and how we might see their influence in the present.
